Historia PTA
From 1985, the Polish Tennis Club was started in Southern California (Polish Tennis Association of Southern California). The club was founded by Wojtek Pietrowski, whose initiative was quickly supported by Marek Zdrojewski. That same year, on June 8, Wojtek organized the first tennis tournament. The tournament was played at Laguna Niguel Regional Park. This first tournament was played in the memory of Dr. Gucia Kol, who was a great tennis enthusiast and friend of polish sportsman. There were 40 participants in the tournament (men & women). The winner of the men's division was Robert Krasucki while the winner of the women's division was Daria Pietrowski. After the tournament, a questionnaire was mailed out to all the participants asking for their opinions and suggestions regarding the organization of the Polish Tennis Association of Southern California. The questionnaire also included the program of the PTA. In the 1985/86 PTA program we proposed the following events: 1. Organizing two tennis tournaments (spring & fall). 2. Running a Challenge List where the participants play matches against one another. 3. Organizing two tennis matches between Los Angeles and Orange County. 4. Organizing tennis picnics. 5. Mailing an information bulletin for PTA members monthly. The first match between Los Angeles and Orange County was played in 1986 at Heritage Park in Irvine. Orange County was victorious by a score of 8 to 1. In October of 1987, the fourth polish tennis tournament took place at El Dorado Park in Long Beach. This time the tournament director turned to Wojtek Fibak with a proposition of playing the tournament in his name. This proposition was accepted. From that time on, the main tournament that is played each year is the Fibak Cup. After realizing the great interest from many people in Southern California about the PTA, a PTA organizational committee was formed in January of 1988. The committee consisted of: Bartek Chmielewski, Zygmunt Jelinski, Marek Lubas, Wojtek Pietrowski and Marek Zdrojewski. The committee worked out a set the bylaws for the PTA and the rules and regulation of the Challenge List. That same year the board of administration of the PTA was elected: Marek Zdrojewski (president), Bartek Chmielewski, Jurek Lada, Barbara Kol and Wojtek Pietrowski. In the coming years, the duty of president was accomplished by: Wojtek Pietrowski, Marek Przywara, Alex Glowacki, Stanislaw Bochenski, Bartek Chmielewski, Leszek Pawlik, Krzysztof Rozek, Dorota Dumania, Ryszard Lobodzinski, Pawel Kalinowski and the current president Sergiusz Swiderski. In the first year of the PTA (1988), there was a total of 36 members. However, right now the PTA has approximately 100 members. These days, besides organizing the Fibak Cup, the PTA organizes other annual events such as Consul Cup (sponsored by the Polish Consulate in Los Angeles) and LOT Cup (sponsored by the Polish Airlines LOT in Los Angeles). There are many members that play in the Slow Tournament, which is held traditionally in the spring of each year. Throughout each year, members also play Challenge List matches. There is also a Tennis Newsletter (Gazetka Tenisowa) that is mailed to all the members on a monthly basis which contains information about the important events of the past and present months. From 1998, the PTA has had its own website which can be found at (www.polishtennis.org).
